People are confused about what exactly gave Forky life, but I think it’s rather simple: it was the childlike love towards a cherished toy that brought him to life. People are saying that it disrupts the canon because it means that there is no limit to what counts as a toy, but I disagree; Forky was treated by Bonnie as a toy specifically, and loved him like she loves the other ones. When a child loves a toy, they basically treat that toy almost like another person; why do you think kids have tea parties, or pretend to be parents and treat their toys like babies, and pretend to have adventures with them, and get so upset when you take them away? It’s because it’s the child unconsciously feeling a level of strong attachment and associating that toy with intense joy. The childish connection with the toys is what breathes life into them. Sure, I could put googlee eyes on the roof of my car, but that doesn’t suddenly bring it to life and make it a Toy Story “toy” in the truest sense, because I don’t see my car as a person, real or not. It’s just something I own. With Forky, Bonnie created him, hugged him, and began playing with him like you’d do any other toy. That being said, Forky is pretty unconventional as a toy, being made out of literal preschool materials, so he doesn’t feel a strong identity as a toy as the others do. As for why he wants to throw himself away - I mean, how many of us have had homemade toys last for very long anyways? It’s common that they aren’t as durable as other toys and end up lost and thrown away at some point, so Forky’s behavior might stem from knowing he won’t last long. But the ones that do last long are definitely held dear to us.

I don’t think I agree that the message is ‘you don’t need others to validate you’ and that Gabby Gabby’s fate undermines this. Instead I think the theme is ‘you choose your own purpose’, which is subtly different. Woody ultimately chooses not to be Bonnie’s toy anymore, but I think the film-makers want us to know that that’s upto him, and either choice would be valid, just as his choice to stay with Andy at the start of the film was valid and led to him meeting Buzz, Jessie etc. That Gabby still chooses a child and they help her - asking ‘are you sure?’ - supports this. She’s now making an informed choice to put herself out there, after being disillusioned of the idea that there was a ‘one’ out there for her who looked like the girl in her book and was destined to accept her. In her own way, Gabby rejected the narrative that was made for her and went to that other child out of choice, not out of a sense of destiny.
Tom پیش 9 روز
The film uses dating and relationships as a metaphor For the relationship between toys and children a few times and, while slightly creepy, it does end up making Gabby ‘s decision akin to dating again after overcoming rejection, and Woody and Bo-Peep’s decision feel more like a decision to ‘play the field’ for a while, without telling us that either is the ‘right’ response.

I think looking at Toy Story and reading into it as parenthood, mortality or an exploration of human relationship with god is completely missing the point. It's an exploration of children's relationships to toys, and how that relationship would be seen if the inanimate side had a consciousness of their own. The original movie taught millions of children to treat their toys right and to appreciate them showing Sid vs Andy. I know it did it for me. And from the Toys side they have a sense of duty and purpose to what they fundamentally are. Toy Story 4, to me, is like if the emotions from Inside Out just packed their bags and said "Hmmm, nah i'm going out into the world and experience these emotions for myself." It seems like a break with the narrative setup they've had going on for 20+ years, to me. Rather... unnecessary movie. I feel something when Woody says goodbye to Buzz, and perhaps I'd like it more if the movie really WAS about them saying goodbye to each other, a theme which, like you pointed out, all 3 other movies generally just narrowly avoid exploring, than it being about Woody and Bo exploring the world as toys or whatever they decide to do.

I am a person who hated this movie. Not every part. But the things she talks about, they were enough to make me personally hate this movie. Also, Disney cut The Incredibles 2 production time by a year, mid-production, so they could give this movie an extra year, and it still became crap. And I love The Incredibles. I cant believe they did that to Brad Bird's crew. Disney is awful.

I personally liked the themes in toy story 2, because I thought it worked best with the parenthood metaphor and also to the idea of growing up. If the toys are a stand in for parents, then it acknowledges that all kids must outgrow their parents and eventually won't rely on them any more, but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy the time you have in the present. Same for if the toys are a stand in for kids, eventually many kids will grow up and have to leave home, but that doesn't mean they won't find love in other places when that happens. That's how i saw it anyway.

Toy Story 2 was about living a fulfilling life, even if it may end in sadness. Overcoming loss, like a bad breakup or the loss of a family member, is crucial. Distancing yourself from the world (literally behind protective glass) does more damage than not experiencing the highs and lows of life. Burying yourself in the past, whether pining for a loved one that is no longer in your life or obsessing over the "glory days" of a nostalgic past, is a fate worse than death. Everything in life is inherently temporary, but worth living. It has some uncomfortable essentialist messages if you're going with the parenting theme, which basically says, "If you avoid having kids, you're not living life," since toys in Toy Story 1-3 are written to not have meaning unless they have a kid to make happy.

I think that part of the reason I could accept Gabby Gabby’s arc was that although Woody had learned along the way what he really needed, Gabby had never had that experience in the first place. Sometimes when you’re so set on one thing, you can’t get out of it until you learn the hard way. Maybe eventually Gabby will go the path of Woody, maybe she won’t. But the point is that she had her own journey to learn from. I was also bothered by the voice box thing, though. She could’ve been noticed without it. I think that variability is more a reflection of real life, although not necessarily good for story telling.

As a big fan of Toy Story 2 (Top 3 Pixar Movie?), allow me to add my two cents. Toy Story 2's theme isn't "[change] won't happen for a really long time"... it's the classic proverb (often attributed, likely falsely, to Dr. Seuss) "Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened." It's about making the most of your time and memories with your loved ones. The people you care about are also the ones who can hurt you the most, and in time you might grow apart (or otherwise lose them), but that doesn't mean you're making a mistake in loving them now. Jessie had a traumatic experience with a family member - not one of malice (because obviously that's not how kids feel towards toys), but one more akin to drifting apart, or even death. However, she took it personally, and it colored her memories of that relationship. The movie is about Woody coming to grips with Andy some day going through the same change, and realizing that's just the way things are, and that he should make the most of it while he can. That he shouldn't go sit in some museum and never be loved again just so that he won't feel the pain of Andy moving on without him. Plus, Woody extends an invitation to Jessie, showing that you can find new friends, family, etc. - and convinces her that sure, there might be tough times ahead, but you can't let that weigh you down when there's so much potential, so many great memories to make before that happens. Can you tell that I like the theme of Toy Story 2? (it was a very formative movie for me - it's one of the handful of movies, books, etc. that I can genuinely say informed my early worldview) Also by extension, Toy Story 3 rings a little hollow for me, because I feel like Woody already learned its lesson in TS2. As for Toy Story 4, it does fit... if turning things a bit on their head. Toy Story 2 already tells us that happiness is precarious, but it also says that going over that eventual cliff is worth it for the journey to get there. Toy Story 4 expands on this view, showing that sometimes that journey can get rocky, and not be fulfilling in the way you might expect, but you can find other forms of happiness in life - there's not just one answer. Toy Story 4 provides an answer for the dilemma of the toys - that some day they'll be too old, unable to continue the cycle for new kids, new generations. In universe, it makes perfect sense. As you said, it's the only realistic long-term solution for the toys. However, the viewpoint of Toy Story 2 rings more true for me in real world application - be optimistic, believe that one will go through cycles, all the while having great experiences with various loved ones, and the only thing holding us back is believing that we can't find happiness again just because the last happy experience of our lives ended. I do like the added theme (botched as it is, as you said) that you don't need the validation of others to find that happiness... but I find the real world parallel to the toys relationship with kids a little lacking, since Woody and Bo Peep are still clearly happier together than either of them would be alone. Self-fulfillment... is a tricky thing, because I don't personally believe that it can ever be a replacement for relationships with other people - it's something that you should pursue alongside them, and use to be more well-rounded in your happiness, so that those losses don't hurt quite so much.

Okay hear me out. The Toys achieve sentience through Cognitive Pscience. An old doll is still widely seen as a "toy", however undesirable she may be. Sid's toys were still seen as toys, repurposed and reassembled into new forms. The fork from Toy Story 4 isn't a toy proper, but is given sentience as Bonny believes he's a plaything like any other. A toy that's been torn apart by an animal can still easily be seen as a toy. Being incinerated would destroy the perception that would make the collective unconscious perceive it as a toy, and thus their existence as such would simply cease to be.

A really interesting mechanic that would’ve added layers to the mortality thing would be that the love of a child keeps toys alive. So it gives that sense of urgency as to why bonnie wanted a child. And if a toy is abandoned under the bed they stay unconscious until the child finds them. Remember in ts2 when buzz is swapped with that other buzz in the toy isle and the whole isle of buzzes are completely motionless? Also woodie in ts2 going into the glass cases is a way to commit suicide abs be free from immortality. Lol.

I read about a funeral for a man in his 20's around the time Toy Story 3 came out, and it mentioned they put in a childhood toy into his coffin as a memento. And I imagined, damn, what if Toy Story 3 involved an Andy as a young man, driving his car with his Woody on the dash as a car memento. He gets into a horiffic accident and dies, and they place his Woody into his coffin as he is buried. Then Woody has to spend 20,000 years trapped in a coffin with the decaying body of his Andy. Then in 20,000 years the graveyard is dug up to make foundations for a skyscraper, and a traumatised woody ends up on display with other historical toys.

I always thougt a Toy only becomes alive when it's loved by a Child. But, the Duck/Rabbit Character doesn't has a Child. So I guess. Everything has a consciousness. Because Forky remembers how it was to be Trash. Things just change what they are, depending on what we think about them. So if the Toys get burned they arent Toys anymore, but the Ash will be alive. Pixar should make a Movie about this :D

Toy Story is one of those movies where you're not supposed to think about the world building too much, but instead just take individual scenes or arcs and learn a lesson or just be happy about the moment, because the real-world implications of "all your toys are alive and maybe immortal" are just a BIT too horrifying to think about. However, since the movie was wildly popular, they had to create a series, a series with LORE, with a past and, now, a potential FUTURE. Bee Movie is still the only animated movie I can think of that tackles this problem directly, when the bees sue the humans for their bee rights and establish themselves as a secondary race of conscious beings deserving of respect. What's interesting is that bees existed naturally in that world, whiles toys in Toy Story are created by people, which significantly weakens any potential claim of natural rights as conscious beings. Humans aren't known for respecting these kinds of rights even amongst themselves, so I can't imagine all the toys in the world suddenly demanding land rights is going to end peacefully. What I'm saying is that Toy Story: War is an inevitable movie given a long enough time frame.
