Hmmm, not sure what to make of this vid. 104k miles and a knackered clutch is disingenuous. Previous owners are responsible for that, not the car. As indeed they may be responsible for oil-related maladies if they’ve not maintained it properly. And on that mileage it IS going to need work such as the power steering leak if previous owners haven’t stayed on top of maintenance. Buy the cars and save them, and show us, but don’t make out ALL miley cars are shit. Cars wear out, fact.
The saggy headlining is unforgiveable. In the late 1970s British Leyland had cloth glued to very thin foam rubber which was then glued to card at first, then to plastic in the 90s. The foam degraded over time into powder and the cloth sagged off the backing or biscuit as it was known. From Minis to Jags all BL products did it. But BMW continuing the practice in the 21st century!
You are correct with your theory about upkeep costs, but it gets worse than that. This next sentence tells you everything you need to know about their reliability and service costs. The mini uses many bmw components, except for the french engine; The car is then wired and assembled in Britain. A friend of mine had the clutch replaced on his 2007 model and it cost 4 grand at a shop that doesn’t overcharge.
No BMW didn't buy Mini Cooper as a company, they bough the Rover group which built the classic shape Mini. BMW eventually sold Rover but had the foresight to keep the Mini brand. All a Mini is now is a BMW 1 series. Oh and don't forget the 100,000 mile service
typical vehicle -- needs a little work from the 50k to 100k mile mark and someone drove it until everything was broken or worn out... and traded it in instead of doing it over the last 3 years...
These were a disaster from the factory. It's like they decided to exhibit the very worst of European automotive engineering in the new MINI. It's got it all. This isn't a dig on European cars, they can be done well but the MINI is just a turd in all ways and it seems to be by design. Peugeot/BMW engine collaboration, plastic shite everywhere, emphasis on gimmicks over quality... just awful.

Here in the UK these are a motoring joke.....the list of problems is endless...crappy american engines in the early ones. to shite peugeot units later,,....timing chains (due in the main to ludicrous service intervals ) clutches ,brakes inlet manifold clogging.electical issues.........
NO. BMW bought Rover who owned/built the Mini. Back in the 80's? John Cooper sold his trademark to Rover as he needed the money and thought with the upcoming emmisons the a series wouldnt carry on. It was a very shrewed buy by BMW.
Hoovie, you are definitely a real enthusiast. Thanks for that and the Mini video. They are pretty rare. Even on IRitem. Commonly known to be a scary ownership experience. Unreliable and disappointing to the extreme but also loved just as passionately for their charm and fun to drive attributes. Please make a video of Ninja's repair of this bomb. You have to. You are probably one of the few guys crazy and quirky enough to make a good go of it.
Everything about this car is saying wheeler dealers mini to me the car was sold in 2018 in socal and everything matches the car inch by inch if Could see plate at back it confirm or deny that theory. If it is that car it's been trashed since original owner
I'd have to argue the 2nd gen mini is the best. I'm biased, I have an r56 jcw hardtop, but I've never had too many serious problems. High pressure fuel pump got recalled and the clutch fork is prone to failure if you use a stiffer aftermarket clutch, but I've never had any problems with things like timing chains or bent valves. I drive it hard and occasionally track it, but as long as I regularly maintenance it and change fluids it works great. Also worth noting that the 2nd gen minis used electric power steering (NOT drive by wire), so all those power steering leaks wouldn't be a problem if you had a 2nd gen lol. But great to see a mini rescue either way, seems like a very rare edition!
The carbon interior trim is almost worth more than the rest of the car nowadays 😂 But hey, very cool to save this R53! Gonna be a great little car when all is fixed. Fix her up and never sell her ever!😃
I owned a 2011 Mini Cooper Clubman S and it was a blast to drive, one of my favorite vehicles I've ever owned. This Mini of yours wasn't maintained at all and that is key to longevity with these cars. They have to be maintained.
Of course.. You shouldn't include shipping cost, the dealer who bring it to US, Tax.. Maybe better if you can just go to bmw hq and tell them to make a simple engine..
Incontinence seems to be a theme at MINI: our 2009 R56 Cooper S with the PSA-BMW 1.6-litre Prince engine needs its fluids checking every week, especially oil to stop the turbo overheating. It’s also had BMW-funded new timing chain guides that disintegrated with MINI ‘forgetting’ to recall it. Only 65k miles from new and well on its way to Hooptie status.
