This was an incredibly challenging video to make. The challenge came with getting the Navy to agree to the interview in the first place, then successfully navigating the interview without it being shut down. In the end, everyone was super professional and it was a really fun topic to learn about! I hope you enjoy, and thank you very much for considering becoming a Patron at (www.patreon.com/smartereveryday)!

Whats funny is it's not just 20,000 leagues that Verne totally predicted the future, but his space travel one, US launched a rocket (bullet in the book) to get to the moon, from Florida too haha He had his finger on technology pulse for sure, it's like living in 2400 and seeing star trek predict all the current warp drive tech

Stupid science Science doesn't know Every second the Sun emits billions billions billions ^ billion lightning 0,1 voltage create sunlight, 1 positron + suck 1 electron -- create lightning 0,1 voltage. Science poisoning the world is the solar system rotating inertia. Children alsoknow that inertia doesn't cause A wheel to spin forever. Positron + and electron -- rotate very rapidly after 4, 6 billion years of creating the Sun ' s core, so the core of the Sun rotates very quickly like A super large electric turbine that produces super large electrical energy, Every second the Sun emits 4,1million tons of electricity create sunlight, sunlight moves the circle back to its original position after 8 hours, so pushes the 8 planet to rotate in order

2:05 Destin describes WW2 sonar capability, the smirk on the sonar chief's face is priceless. 7:20 no object "shapes" per se in sub sonar target classification, not necessary to the mission. However, "bearing" (aka direction, 0-360 deg, true/relative) is key and instantaneous from equipment in active or passive sonar. 8:00 Getting warmer, bearing rate is used initially to make sure you're not going to run into something, on the right-drawing-left and on the left-drawing-right objects get your attention because they are 'closing' range (6th grade geometry). The fun starts when the classification and Target Motion Analysis (TMA) kick in. Ultimately, when the tactical sonar picture is complete, the conn (control room, derived from "conning tower") has a 3D mental image of own-ship and target with physical and mental overlays of; nautical chart, threat perception, intelligence and most important - forward thinking; what are we going to DO with that info? Classify it, log it, track it, record it, shadow it, play with it, manipulate it, or maybe kill it. Great work as always Destin. Cheers!

Modern active sonar doesn't send a repetitive ping of the same frequency, they project a continous song of cat and mouse(natural sounds such as those krill pops he mentioned). I think justin actually captured some of that recorded natural background sound in his footage from the briefing room. Ambient noise like that would not exist on a sub which is specifically designed to eliminate this.

Destin @11:13 you depicted the sub nose with sound receptors. That particular pattern of receptors and individual spacing most likely portray a very important part of the equation on sound direction and speed of return to each receptor.

What a waste of time. If it's really that hard for him to do the interview, just say they aren't allowed to do it full stop. Spending the whole time acting like somebody is trying to trip him up with simple straight forward questions about things that are general knowledge was pathetic. In the end, he basically said nothing. Obviously he can't go into specifics, but acting all cagey when discussing the general theory of sonar and it's application was laughable.

BD is an easy equation to figure out, it's also easily changed with and acoustic screecher. Basically, listen to the range, then send screechers that cancel said waves, this will effectively create multiple shadow zones.

There was a pretty good video game in the 70s called Harpoon, in which you were in charge of a US Naval Carrier group including submarines. I definitely remember the it teaching about how your ship sonar would bend and work in concentric circles. The thermocline effect was also described as was those acoustic corridors. I have to say that Destin's explanation was way more clear... :) . But in the game you can also drop a mic on a line between those layers by deploying a helicoptor on ASW duty. Also interesting that the only pickups they discussed were the ones on the hull, I'm sure the SSN-21 Seawolf sub game back in 94 you could deploy a towed acoustic array which would give more isolation from the submarine's internal noises as well as another more distant audio pickup to help triangulate.
